Great Greek Myths 03 – Hades, A Reluctant King

Having become organiser of the world, Zeus entrusted the world of the sea to his brother Poseidon, and the underworld, or the kingdom of the dead, to Hades. Alone, in a place he had not chosen himself, Hades reigned over the people of the shadows and over the grimacing creatures that surrounded him.

A terrifying river that reeks of death, the River Styx is the route by which the dead reach

The River Styx is black. The sun’s rays never shine on it. It passes streams of molten rock and converges upon the Underworld. It is Charon’s duty to carry its shadowy passengers along the way, but unless the passenger is carrying a coin to pay for his voyage, his soul will never rest.

Charon is an old and ugly man, who is dressed in rags. His parents were Erebus, the god of darkness and Nyx, the goddess of Night.

The 3-headed dog Cerebus waits at the gate of Hades. It is his job to guard the underworld so that no one can leave there, once they have arrived. The underworld is a place from which no one can escape.
Although their lots in life are vastly different, Hades is the brother of Zeus. Since Zeus was the supreme god, he decided who of his brothers would rule over each portion of his kingdom. Poseidon was made the ruler of the Seas, and Hades was made the ruler of the underworld.
It is interesting that not every portion of the underworld was terrifying. Tartarus was the deepest and most terrible part of that realm, but the Elysian Fields were a much more pleasant area, but it was still a region for dead people. It was not a place that anyone wanted to go, but it was simply not as dreadful as Hades.
Hades was both the name of a place and the name of the ruler of that place.
Hades did not have a pleasant life in Hades. Hades was forced to rule his dark realm in isolation, but very rarely, he finds an occasion that allows him to leave the underworld for short periods of time.
One night he hitched his horses to his chariot and crossed the Sicilian plains beneath Mount Aetna. As he passed through Greece, he caught the silhouette of a figure off in the distance. As he moved closer, he saw a beautiful girl who was picking flowers. Her name was Persephone.
Persephone was the daughter of Zeus and Demeter. Hades was immediately smitten by Persephone’s beauty, and he went to see Zeus to ask for Persephone’s hand.
This request put Zeus in a difficult position. Zeus tells Hades that he could neither give nor
Hades returned to the plains of Sicily, and to the region of Mount Aetna. Persephone was still where she had been before. Hades disappeared beneath his cap of invisibility and proceeded to kidnap the young maiden.  He had retreated into an area beneath the earth’s surface, and on his chariot, he lept out of the earth and whisked Persephone away to the underworld.
When Demeter went looking for Persephone, only Hecate was brave enough to tell Demeter what had happened to her daughter.
Hecate was a goddess of duality. Hecate stood at the crossroads between good and evil
Hecate took Demeter to Helios – the sun who sees all. Hades told Demeter who had taken Persephone. Demeter was the goddess of crops, and he brought a famine upon the earth.
Zeua sent his son Hermes to  tell Dades of the earth’s fate.
