Athena punished Medusa by turning her into a monster whose hair was a nest of writhing, poisonous snakes.

To make matters worse, anyone who looked at Medusa would be turned into stone. Medusa literally became the “face of death.”

Athena increased her punishment by banishing Medusa to a remote island.

Medusa was a Gorgon.

The Greek Hero Perseus Slayed Medusa. Perseus was a Demi-God.

The Ancient Greeks believed that Medusa had the power to ward off potential danger. Therefore, they believed that she had some good qualities.

Mycenae

In the late 19th Century, archaeologists discovered the ruins of an ancient civilization at Mycenae. This discovery seems to validate some of the old Greek stories.

By looking at Medusa through her reflection on his shield, Persues avoided being turned to stone.
